Crystals are key when it comes to reducing cement’s carbon footprint Published on October 4th, 2016 | By: Stephanie Liverani [Image above] Credit: whereareyousimon; Flickr CC BY 2.0 From infrastructure to automobiles to electricity, our manufacturing processes and the ways we consume energy are getting “greener.” And the goal is clear: reduce carbon emissions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is developing stringent standards to reduce emissions, and this week India formally joined the Paris climate change agreement by officially adding the country to the list of United Nations members to ratify the plan. But the challenge remains when it comes to transforming how we manufacture one of the most ubiquitous construction materials on the planet—cement. Current cement manufacturing practices are carbon-intensive. In fact, today’s standard Portland cement production accounts for nearly 5% of the world’s total carbon emissions, so researchers are l

3-D-printed bioceramic composite offers flexible new hope for bone replacement Published on October 4th, 2016 | By: April Gocha, PhD [Image above] Hyperelastic bone 3-D-printed in the shape of a section of the human spine. Credit: Adam E. Jakus Whether you’re attacked by a bear (twice) or trip and fall because you’re distracted by a set of see-through bathrooms, at some point most of us need help repairing these impressive bodies we live in. So an important goal of biomaterials research is to be able to repair and replace bone when and where we need it. And although much success has been made in this area—such as here, here, here, here, here, or here—we still don’t have an ideal biomaterial with widespread clinical availability. That ideal material needs to be robust enough to match the strength of natural bone, yet flexible enough to integrate with the body—and biocompatible, rapidly deployable (even in the operating room), customizable, and reasonably sc

Next Generation Materials used in Solar Cell Farms By Benedette CuffariJun 2 2016 Image Credit: Notto Yeez | Shutterstock.com The spread of solar cell farms - power plants fueled by the sun and typically found where the sun is plentiful and land is cheap - are evidence of the ever-evolving solar technology. Two forms dominate; photovoltaic (PV) solar farms and solar thermal technology. PV solar farms have hundreds to thousands of solar panels mounted on large racks, often covering hundreds of acres to produce enough electricity to feed power grids and communities. Solar thermal technology precedes PV, and it works by capturing the suns heat to convert it into electricity. This form uses mirrors to concentrate the sun’s heat into a steam-generating central column that then spins a turbine to make electricity. Solar Cell Farms Around the World For example, Pakistani public company Quaid-e-Azam Solar Power (Pvt.) Limited is building the Quaid-e-Azam Solar Power Park, a $130 million

Latest sintering technology makes ceramic-based materials faster with less heat Published on September 29th, 2016 | By: Stephanie Liverani At the end of February, the U.S. Department of Energy launched a $40 million effort to improve materials for clean energy solutions. And many science agencies have seen their federal budgets for R&D retu to levels in FY 2016 not reached since the FY 2013 sequestration—even adjusting for inflation, according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Companies are also getting on-board with more cash for new materials research. Earlier this year CoorsTek aounced plans to invest $120 million to build an advanced materials R&D facility in its headquarters city of Golden, Colo., “outfitted with leading-edge equipment to develop iovative ceramic materials and processes for a variety of next-generation applications,” according to a company press release.

OLED on ceramic heralds new possibilities for durable, flexible lighting and displays Thursday 22 September 2016 14:00 Dutch R&D institute Holst Centre (set up by imec and TNO) and American ultra-thin ceramics supplier ENrG Inc. have created the first ever ceramic-based, large-area flexible OLED. The device, manufactured on the 20-40 µm thick Thin E-Strate® ceramic substrate, promises a lifetime in excess of 10 years without the formation of blackspots. The ceramic carrier is also easy to handle and capable of withstanding the high temperatures used in display backplane manufacturing and standard sintering processes. The ceramic substrate used for the 12 cm by 2.5 cm prototype OLED device combines many of the best properties of other flexible OLED carriers. It offers an intrinsic barrier to protect the sensitive OLED from the environment, as with metal foils or flexible glass. But it is much easier to handle than either. Like plastic films, the ceramic offers the potential fo

Ripple effect: Ripplocations help explain dislocation theory in layered materials Published on September 30th, 2016 | By: April Gocha, PhD New research is maximizing on the potential of MAX phases, a group of layered teary carbide and nitride materials with a unique combination of ceramic and metal properties. [For more information on MAX phases, see this 2013 ACerS Bulletin article by Miladin Radovic and Michel Barsoum.] Last week I reported on 2-D MAX phase materials, called MXene materials, that can provide superior electromagnetic shielding with less bulk than conventional metal strategies for protecting electronic devices. And now researchers at Drexel University report on their studies of MAX phase ceramics that describe a completely new observation of how materials deform—a finding with broad implications for various other kinds of layered materials.

The new Lightning Bearing Technology (LBT) line of ceramic bicycle bearings by Boca Bearing Company The Boca Bearing Company is proud to aounce the new Lightning Bearing Technology (LBT) line of ceramic bicycle bearings for hubs, bottom brackets, headsets and pivot points. Ceramic by its nature is lighter than steel by about 2/3 the weight, it is harder than steel when it is in ball form and it is virtually frictionless because it is non-porous. A ceramic hybrid bearing has steel races with ceramic balls and a full ceramic bearing has ceramic races and balls. Full ceramic and ceramic hybrid bearings are particularly well suited to both competitive and recreational bicycle applications. The Boca Bearing Company have been an industry leader in ceramic bearing technology for over 15 years. Reducing rolling resistance and conserving energy has been our hallmark. We offer a full line of standard, full ceramic & ceramic hybrid bearings specifically suited to bicycles. Various ABEC tole

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) researchers, along with a team from UC Santa Cruz (UCSC), have devised a method for doubling the performance of 3-D-printed graphene-based supercapacitors. The method, which involves sandwiching lithium ion and perchlorate ion between layers of graphene in aerogel electrodes, substantially improved the capacity of the electrodes while still maintaining the devices’ excellent rate capability, the researchers discovered. Their findings are featured as the back cover for the June edition of the joual ChemNanoMat. “This is a unique method that significantly raises the performance of our previous graphene aerogel supercapacitors,” said LLNL engineer and paper co-author Cheng Zhu. “We’ve modified the devices and found the best recipe.” A Lawrence Livermore Lab team, along with researchers from UC Santa Cruz, found that by sandwiching lithium ion and perchlorate ion between layers of graphene, they could substantially improve the pe
